Where the mountain answers
Bucovina Ultra Rocks by UTMB begins where spruce crowns meet legend: in the greenest corner of Romania, one of Europe’s last true wilderness strongholds. Runners arrive from every corner of the map, and at nearly every turn a guardian volunteer is waiting.
The Mission
One wake-up call, fast and steep 5k course. Then six courses, from 15 to 114 kilometers, follow shepherd paths over Rarău, Giumalău and Pietrosu Bistriței, brush past Lady’s Rocks, thread the Moara Dracului Gorge and sink into the ancient Slătioara Forest. At the special aid stations, live cooking fills the air: smoked trout, slow cooked meats, sweet poale-n brâu pastries. Reusable cups and shared shuttles keep the footprint light, and forty percent of the food comes from local producers.
A mountain that gives back
Bucovina Ultra Rocks by UTMB treats the trail as a guestroom, not a playground. We partner with nearby councils and villages to replace private cars with shuttle fleets, draw 40 percent of all aid-station food from local producers, and keep Bucovina’s crafts and stories in the world’s line of sight year-round. Our rule is simple: leave it better than you found it.
The spark behind the legendary treasure of Romania
It began in August 2020, in the middle of a strange year. On the night of 7 to 8 August, five hundred runners slipped through the streets of Câmpulung Moldovenesc, and the race took its first breath: a pandemic gamble by Race Director Paul Smereciuc. Today it is the largest trail running gathering in Romania and a beacon for athletes worldwide, yet the flame has not changed. A course where every runner, first or last, lifts their arms with the same pride. A land protected for the legends it lends. A community where going beyond your limit, safety and raw wonder light the way. It was a race once.
Now it is a movement, a brand, a family, and a bridge.
